Governor Ted Strickland wants to more closely coordinate the offerings of the state's public colleges and universities. Ohio flunks the affordability test in a new independent report on American higher education. The study says even after financial aid is taken into account, poor and working-class Ohio families would have to devote 57 percent of their income to send a student to a public four-year college.

Ohio health officials report the number of abortions performed in Ohio has dropped to a 31 year low. About 30,860 were performed last year - the fewest since the State Department of Health starting keeping track in 1976.But while the overall number of abortions are down, one segment of the population - teenage African Americans - is seeing a rise in the number of abortions.

Columbus City council has given a green light to a 30 percent income tax abatement to Children's Hospital. The tax incentive is designed to help the hospital expand and create 2,400 new jobs during the next five years at its Parsons and Livingston location. Council-member and development chair Mary Ellen O'Shaughnessy says the agreement will keep jobs from possibly moving to the suburbs.

Ohio Will Boost Its Tracking Of Parolees.
Crime victims will be able to find out when an inmate is released with the help of changes to Ohio's criminal tracking system. State officials say a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will allow Ohio to upgrade its current tracking system by 2010.

Ohio Veterans Advocate Wants More Funds To Treat Gulf War Illness.
The 1991 Persian Gulf War has been followed by 17 years of pain and anguish for hundreds of thousands of veterans. John Schwertfager heads the advocacy group Ohio Gulf War Veterans. He says many of the veterans who came home physically ill were told it was all in their heads. Now, he says they struggle with real mental health problems after years of chronic pain and personal problems such as divorce and the inability to work.

A 3-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Tuesday that the Ohio Supreme Court rather than federal court is the proper forum to decide whether thousands of provisional ballots will be counted. Riding on the outcome of that count is the congressional race in Ohio's 15th District where Republican Steve Stivers leads Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy by fewer than 600 votes.

Columbus Welcomes Soccer Champions.
Members of the Columbus Crew arrived home Monday night to a welcome from more than 100 fans, many wearing the team's black and gold. The team was cheered as it descended an airport escalator with Mayor Michael Coleman, who helped hold up the MLS Cup.
