Here is the plasma tunnel. It's a simple foreground over background composite with each element rendered separately out of Maya. The scale is a little off, but that's how it goes. Rather than try to perfect this shot, I am going to move on and come up with something better! Next up will be the second half of my final last semester, the 300 Field Scene. Then I will start some serious yet flexible R&D on the opening shot for my thesis, the creation of light.

Play Podcast    Plasma Beam 070707
Hi folks! Here is a shot that I came up with in the last week. I have been working on more of a film resolution look and I settled on 1440 x 600. The ipod compression knocked it down to 640 x 266. I also worked on compositing seperate layers but was having some issues with the geometry mattes so I just rendered it straight out of Maya. This is more research for the look of my thesis, so keep an eye out for my next shot, a plasma tunnel fly through!

Play Podcast    Wall Of Ice 062407
Hi, and welcome to demo reel! This is the final for my particles class this past Spring semester. For those of you who don't know what particles are, it is a 3d reproduction of physics and natural phenomenon such as smoke, fire, objects falling with gravity and colliding with each other. The assignment was to propel the car up a ramp, through a ring of fire and then smash through a wall of ice. One of my favorite part of this assignment was rendering out each element seperately for compositing, as you can see in the shot breakdown. I really enjoy this type of work, so look for more dynamic simulations down the line!

Play Podcast    300 Wolf Scene 061207
Hi Folks! This shot is half of my final assignment for a compositing class at the Academy. I downloaded a trailer for the movie 300 and then shot some greenscreen footage of myself. The assignment was to key and motion track using high definition video. the original BG plate we 1920 x 800 and my foreground element we 1920 x 1080. I pulled multiple keys on the hair, arm, guitar, shirt and motion tracked garbage mattes to pull them in. It's a little goofy but I was going for a music video based on the soundtrack for a movie kinda look. Of course, color correction played a big part. I addedd a fake snow over the top and adjusted the final resolution. It's only 50 frames so don't blink!

Play Podcast    Thesis Shot 4 Previsualization

Hi folks, welcome to my demo reel! This shot is the final project for one of my classes at the Academy of Art for the Spring 2007 semester. It is a previsualization of shot 4 of my thesis called "3 Days".

In this shot, we see the creation of land and plants. I also wrote and performed the guitar tracks which may sound familiar. They are based on some of my favorite Pink Floyd and CCR riffs.

Keep an eye out for my finished thesis in June of 2008. It will feature a rockin' soundtrack performed by me featuring some familiar riffs and licks from Rimsky Korsakov's "The Flight of the Bumblebee", Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 4", Rossini's "William Tell Overture", the theme from "Jaws" as well as variations on the tunes heard here.

The thesis is about the first 3 days of creation as told in the account of Genesis. The soundtrack will be used as a structure to build the visual effects around. It will be about 2-3 minutes long.

Play Podcast    Inside mp3

Hi folks, this is the mp3 for the upcoming music video "Inside". I recorded it exclusively with Garage Band. Guitars, bass and vocals were recorded live - yes that's my voice! The drum tracks were stock loops. If you heard any of the music that accompanied some of the previous posts I've made then you should really dig this.

The video is almost done, just a few tweaks here and there. The VFX that comprise the video are just as fiery as the music!

I have been playing guitar and writing songs for about 24 years and I have a music degree. I decided to integrate my musical and VFX skills because the music gives me a good story to work with. Once the music is done then I start visualizing elements that would go well with a certain section of music.

The story behind this song is there's a tormented individual who has some kind of problem in his head. As we progress through the song we get deeper into his head and discover that all this dementia is caused by a search for inner peace.

Subscribe now so you don't miss the video!

Here is the third installment of The Sketch Boys. Thanks to Robert Spriggs for letting me use the song "Ejector Seat". Please google him and check out some more of his work. The initial title for this cartoon was The Spam Bandit, after I was pegged for spamming the Adobe After Effects and Premiere forum boards. Through feedback from another 3d animation forum I decided to change the title to El Spam Bandito and introduce Carlos. I was encouraged by a former co-worker to include a female character. All voices, animation and editing by yours truly. Don't forget the big "Inside" music video coming up. Subscribe so you won't miss it!

Play Podcast    San Frisco Demo Reel 11 062606
This is the second Sketch Boys animation I came up with. Inspired by a trip to San Francisco, CA. I took once when I worked for the County of Santa Cruz. I hardly ever went to SF and I misjudged the timing. Next thing I was stuck in heavy traffic and going the wrong way! I was extremely late for my meeting, which was a luncheon/pow wow of local government audit managers. No, I wasn't the audit manager, I was supposed to meet the audit manager there (and get 8 hours of education credits). Anyways, it was an embarrasing moment and the audit manager actually wrote me up for being 4 hours late! Ironically, the meeting was held in the Veteran's Hall across the street from one of the Academy of Art buildings, before I ever thought of going back to school! Shortly thereafter I quit that job and now I travel to SF on a regular basis to attend classes at the Academy of Art! Is that weird or what?

Play Podcast    Ice Cream Demo Reel 10 060806
This is the first episode in a five part series called The Sketch Boys I made last year with a few inexpensive programs like Poser 4, Acid 4.0 and Mimic. In it, Jim and Reggie can't decide whether to lounge around the house or go out for a snack. First I wrote the script and then recorded the voices into Acid. I used Mimic to create the lip sync files and applied those files to 3d models and rendered them out of Poser.

Play Podcast    Ocean Death Demo Reel 07 030606
This is a shot I worked on to experiment with effects in Maya. I needed to learn how the ocean shader works and I thought I would have a little fun with it as well. This shot represents a lot of CG work that I will later on combine with live action footage. Specifically the "Inside" music video.

Play Podcast    Film Noir Demo Reel 06 020406
This is a really popular shot. I took a still image from "The Maltese Falcon" and painted out the parts I didn't want the audience to see. I filmed myself lip synching the dialog and after I composited the whole thing it matched up pretty good. I added noir elements, shadows and old film effects to seam it all together.

Here is my demo reel as of January 16, 2006. It is a collection of the best visual effects (VFX) and computer generated (CG) animation shots I completed last semester. I did all the animation, compositing and music except for the last scene. That is a collaboration with an actor named Ryan Cox who spoke the words of Job. Stay tuned for the shot breakdown where I show you how step by step how I made the shots. Adam
