The Look of Love

Luke 6:27-36. The Shape of Gospel love in our relationships. Gospel love is action for the prosperity of the other person at our expense. It is opposite treatment of the other and will cost us deeply. This kind of love is other wordly and therefore, must be rooted in the love of God for us as sinners. The kind of love that a resurrected Jesus can produce in his people.

Relationships and a New Identity

We need a new identity in our relationships. If we use our hands to build and identity for ourselves, we will always experience insecurity. We inherently know that our hands build weak and sinful things. But, if our identity is built on the righteousness of Christ that is given to us by faith, then our identity is secure and we can beginning giving in our relationships instead of taking.

Repentance and the Gospel

Luke 15:8-10 - the Gospel and Repentance. The joy of the Christian is bound up in knowing that God is rejoicing over us in Christ. But, our hearts so often do not grasp this reality because we don't come to God with our sin stained hands. When we do, we will find him rejoicing over us and drawing near to us in Christ.

Experiencing the Cross

The Christian is united to Christ in his death and resurrection. So, the Christian experiences suffering and trials because he/she belongs to Jesus. They are not a sign that things are wrong, but a sign that things are right. God works life into the Christian in the context of suffering...this is the experience of the cross.

This sermon was preached to RUF staff at our bi-annual staff training. The text is 2 Corinthians 4:7-12.

Prodigal Sons 2: The Danger of the Older Brother

How do we connect with God as a sinner? Jesus confronts both immorality and morality in the parable. Neither connect us with God as sinners. Both the fundamentalist street preacher and those he condemns are wrong in their fundamental approach to wholeness. Our only hope is in the salvation that Jesus freely gives. The gospel makes us whole.

Joshua 1:10-18

Do you want to be part of something bigger than yourself? Do you want to make a visible, lasting difference in the world around you? When Jesus ascends his throne, he gives his people the privelege of building his church. He promises to be the builder, but he gives each person who becomes a Christian an essential role to play.

The Israelites who are following Joshua into the Promised Land must contribute. No part of God's people can rest until the whole of God's people rests. We need each other.

Living as God's Temple

The Temple of God was where God dwelt with His people. It was a taste of paradise lost...and a taste of paradise regained.

The Christian is the new Temple of God. We are meant to populate the world around us with his glory. We are meant to draw others to Christ to become new temples.

Jace Broadhurst, a PhD candidate at Westminster Theological Seminar, and a missionary opens Gen 1:28 for us and takes us on a tour through the Bible as we look at the Temple of God.

Rebels without a Cause

The Fifth Commandment.

We are rebels. We all have to admit it. We don't like to be told what to do. But, what are we rebelling against?

The gospel of Jesus makes us rebels against our rebellion. Jesus is creating a new people who love authority and see the wisdom of living under it.

Perhaps that is more freeing that constantly rebelling in hope that freedom might come...

Powerful Living: Loving God's Name

Names are important to people...no one likes to have their name poked fun at. Christianity has a plausible explanation for this - we are created in the image of the God who highly values His name.

The gospel tells us that Jesus gives us his name and all of its access, priveleges, and benefits. Then he takes our shameful, guilty, and evil name to the cross.

This is powerful living in love with God's name.

Worship: What If I Don't Like It

Worship - it greets our souls in their deepest crevices. And yet, it stirs up much debate among Christians. How do you like to be loved? They way you decide or by someone else's imposing definition of what you like?

The Second Commandment helps us by answering some of these questions. Surely the one true God deserves true worship.

Some say we seek pleasure - built the first commandment reminds us that what we really want is satisfaction. And, our souls aren't satisfied until we can relate to the God who made us. For this, we need to be free from guilt and shame by faith in Christ.
